Beyonce Knowles belted an inspiring rendition of her new single “Halo” to kick off the 2009 NAACP Image Awards held on Thursday February 12, 2009. In what has been quite a historic year for the African American community, this year’s Image Awards allowed the pride of their race to be shown through a wonderful slide show that revealed images of hardship and ended with images of triumph in the form of a portrait of current President Barack Obama. Beyonce sang a wonderful version of her song Halo as the slide show was playing on large monitors behind her.
The NAACP Image Awards is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2009 (which is also the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the NAACP) and the stars came out in large numbers to celebrate the event. Jennifer Hudson won the award for “outstanding new artist” and Jamie Foxx won the “outstanding male artist” award over fellow pop star (and recently tarnished name) Chris Brown.
